Full roof replacement

Your roofing contractor must have a firm understanding of all the factors involved: roof loading, structural integrity, material suitability, construction standards.

Tiles are heavier than slates and the method of fixing is different, so your roofing contractor needs to know his trade.

Both clay and concrete tiles are available either as flat tiles or profiled. The original Roman clay pan tile was cupped to facilitate the creation of a rain-shedding interlock. Today there is a bewildering range of profile options to choose from.

Technicalities

The science of roof construction

Relative humidity

Relative humidity.

Living, breathing, bathing and cooking — all these things drive up the moisture content in a home. Warm air can hold more moisture than cold air so when warm humid air touches a cold surface condensation occurs. Damp surfaces can be unpleasant to touch and can cause mould to grow but worse still is the condensation you can't see. This is called 'interstitial condensation'. This is the moisture that condenses inside your walls and roofing.

Stack affect.

Stack effect

Because warm air rises the greatest danger from interstitial condensation is in your roof.

When houses were draughty and had open fires the vapour pressure created by all this moist air simply leaked outside.

In modern energy-efficient homes special construction methods must be employed to deal with this potential problem

Ridge vent.

Ridge vents

A vapour permeable ventilated ridge tile system is one method of ensuring that moisture vapour can escape while the correct application of thermal insulation will maintain good heat retention in the home.

Ridge tiles.

Ridge tiles

The latest British Standard Code of Practice mandates that, on new roofs, ridge tiles must now be mechanically fixed and can no-longer simply be bedded in mortar. Vapour permeable components can be incorporated in the mechanically fixed ridge tile system.
